The Academy, conducted each year in early January, is designed to give new chapter officers a strong foundation so they can dynamically and courageously lead their chapters. Brothers participating are exposed to the basic elements of chapter operations as well as higher level leadership development, providing them with the knowledge and leadership skills needed for effective chapter management. 

The 2022 Academy will be held January 7-9, 2022 in St. Louis, MO at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton.

Registration

The registration deadline for undergraduate attendees, Section Chiefs and Purple Legionnaires is Wednesday, December 8, 2021. Hotel accommodations cannot be guaranteed for registrations received after this date.

Registration Fees

Undergraduates

It is strongly encouraged for Presidents, Treasures and Recruitment Chairmen or New Member Educators to attend, as well as new Purple Legionnaires. Additional brothers are permitted to attend, with tracks offered for Recording Secretaries, Corresponding Secretaries and Historians. Brothers are strongly encouraged to participate in Pursuing Excellence sessions, which provide opportunities to dive deep into critical issues facing our chapters.

Every chapter/colony is billed for THREE delegates ($475 each for a total of $1,425) to attend the Academy. Additional delegates are encouraged to attend and will be invoiced ($475 each) to the chapter/colony after the event.

 Undergraduate Registration Includes:

  • Shared accommodations (up to four undergraduates per double-bedded room from the same chapter) at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel for Friday (Jan. 7) and Saturday (Jan. 8) nights. Brothers will be required to provide a credit card to the hotel for incidental charges.  
    • The Fraternity will make all hotel room reservations based on Academy registration. 
    • If you need a room for Thursday (Jan. 6) - LET US KNOW. Your chapter will be billed extra room nights (approximate cost: $124/room night). 
    • Undergraduates may request additional room(s) so that a maximum of two (2) brothers share a hotel room. These are available on a limited (first-come, first-serve) basis, and your chapter will be billed for the additional room(s). LET US KNOW if you would like to request additional rooms. 
  • All meals beginning with dinner Friday evening and concluding with dinner Saturday.
  • All conference materials.
  • A commemorative Academy gift.
 

Graduates

Tracks are offered for Section Chiefs and Purple Legionnaires, as well as other graduate volunteers/advisors.

Section Chiefs and Purple Legionnaires are provided complimentary registration, and other graduates will be charged the $475 fee at registration.

 Graduate Registration Includes:

  • Shared accommodations (up to two graduates per double-bedded room) at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel for Friday (Jan. 7) and Saturday (Jan. 8) nights. Brothers will be required to provide a credit card to the hotel for incidental charges.  
    • The Fraternity will make all hotel room reservations based on Academy registration. 
    • If you need a room for Thursday (Jan. 8) - LET US KNOW.  
    • Graduates may request a single room at their own expense (approximate cost: $62/room night), payable to the Union Station hotel at checkout. You may make this request as a part of the Academy registration.
  • All meals beginning with dinner Friday evening and concluding with dinner Saturday.
  • All conference materials.
  • A commemorative Academy gift.
 
 

When Do I Need to Be in St. Louis?

Arrive: Friday afternoon, January 7, 2022 (Pursuing Excellence sessions begin at 2:00 pm CT)

Depart: Anytime on Sunday, January 9, 2022

Transportation

Attendees are responsible for their own travel to/from the Academy and for all parking costs. 

 Undergraduate Travel Reimbursement

Each chapter receives one reimbursement at a rate of $0.12 per mile for the round-trip mileage from your chapter to St. Louis, MO. The reimbursement will be applied to your chapter's account at the International Headquarters following the Academy. To receive your reimbursement, your chapter's delegates must attend.

 Flying to St. Louis

Brothers flying to the Academy should arrive in St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL), approximately 15 miles from the Union Station hotel.

 

Getting to the Academy Hotel

The Academy will be held at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel: 1820 Market Street, St. Louis, Missouri, 63103. Phone: 314-621-5262. 

 Directions to the Hotel from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport

Metrolink: A light rail train system connects both terminals of the airport to the downtown area. From the airport, take the Red Line to the Union Station Metrolink Station. Upon arrival, proceed to 18th Street and right onto Market Street to get to the hotel entrance. Reference these directions.

Total travel time is 27-30 minutes. The trains depart approximately every 20 minutes. Fare from the airport is $2.50. 

Please note: As in any setting, be cautious of your surroundings, especially on public transportation. 

Taxi/Shared Ride Services: There are taxis available outside of baggage claim at the airport or from the lobby of the St. Louis Union Station Hotel. Cab fare runs approximately $45 each way. Shared ride services such as Uber or Lyft may also be available. Fares generally run between $30-$40 each way.

If you drive to the Academy, the Fraternity has negotiated parking rates of $17.50/day for self-parking or $22.50/day for valet. The parking fees are your responsibility. 

 Travel Concerns

Because of the timing and location of our Academy, it is important to be prepared for travel delays. If you are delayed, do not worry. Just get to St. Louis and the Union Station hotel as soon as you can. If you are delayed to the point you will not arrive on your scheduled day, contact Taren Robin to adjust your hotel reservation. 

 

COVID-19 Precautions

Vaccines & COVID Tests

Phi Gamma Delta is taking all reasonable steps necessary to host a safe, in-person Fiji Academy. With this in mind, we are requiring all attendees to provide proof of vaccination or negative COVID test, which must be completed no more than 72 hours prior to arrival.

If you are fully vaccinated and have not yet uploaded your proof of vaccination, view more information about uploading your proof of vaccination under "Health Screenings" below. Uploading your proof of vaccination in advance will streamline the registration process. NOTE: You will not be able to participate in Fiji Academy until this documentation is submitted.

We strongly encourage all attendees to be fully vaccinated and receive the booster shot if eligible. We also strongly encourage all attendees to be tested prior to attendance (regardless of vaccination status). Only those not fully vaccinated will be required to show proof.

Masks

All attendees will be required to WEAR A MASK (regardless of vaccination status) unless actively eating or drinking at meals.

 Health Screenings

We will be using HealthShield provided by 42chat to track proof of vaccination status, negative COVID test and daily health screenings. For more information, view the User Guide or FAQ.   • On December 20, attendees who have provided mobile numbers at registration will receive a text message with a link to upload documents or take a screening.
  • If you do not receive a text message or want to upload your proof of vaccination earlier, you can scan the QR Code (if viewing on a desktop) OR click this link (if viewing on a cell phone) to upload your document(s). 

If You Test Positive at Academy

Any attendee who tests positive for COVID-19 or feels sick prior to departure for St. Louis should cancel your reservation. Attendees who experience COVID-19 symptoms or test positive once onsite must immediately isolate from other attendees and report their symptoms to a member of the Fraternity staff so that precautionary protocols may be enacted.

Pursuing Excellence Sessions

Pursuing Excellence sessions are available for brothers on Friday, January 7, 2022, beginning at 2:00 pm CT. It is strongly encouraged that each attendee from each chapter picks a different topic. You will rank your choices on the Academy registration form, and you will be notified of your assigned session prior to arriving in St. Louis. 

 Academic Bootcamp

Does your chapter struggle with being among the best chapters academically on your campus? Do you have many members who struggle to do well in their classes? Do you have a difficult time recruiting strong students to your chapter? Do you have too many new members who fail to reach their academic potential? Do you struggle to hold members accountable who do not meet academic expectations? Does your chapter do “ok” academically, but want to do better? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Academic Bootcamp will help you overcome these challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from each other and the Educational Director Amelious Whyte (Minnesota Faculty) about successful strategies to advance academic excellence in their chapter, discuss unique challenges that are holding their chapter back, and leave with a plan for how they can improve scholarship within their chapter.

 Building Up Without Tearing Down

Do members of your chapter believe in the benefits of hazing? Do you? Are you aware of the possible consequences? Most of those people that are caught hazing knew those consequences but continued to haze despite them. Why, when there are so many reasons for so many people to know better, do those people not do better? Powerful cultural, organizational, and social forces can alter the behavior of ordinary people. These forces not only make average people do negative, destructive things, but they have the potential to also compel average people to do positive, constructive things. To stop hazing, we must build people up without tearing them down. In this interactive workshop, we will examine the forces and motivations that drive hazing and develop actionable strategies for empowering the members of your organization to become their best. 

 Me & My Brothers: Embracing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for Chapter Success

During this session, brothers will learn about the concepts of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) through the various identities each other hold. Brothers will also discuss how this issue impacts our chapter and what responsibilities our chapter’s hold to help promote DEI for the betterment of our fraternity and its members. Participants will leave this session with tangible skills that can be used each day when they return to their respective campuses.

Facilitated by Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging DeVere Kutscher (Davidson 1997), Shawn Knight, M.Ed. (Clemson 2016) and Tim Ira (Alberta 2011).

 Men as the Solution: Sexual Violence Prevention

In addition to hearing Brenda Tracy's sexual assault survival story, participants will learn about their role to create cultures that value safety and accountability and why Brenda believes men are the solution to end sexual violence. With actionable items and time for Q&A, participants will leave feeling empowered to make a difference in their own lives and those around them.

 Mental Health: If Everyone Is Fine, What's Wrong With Me?

Have you ever wondered how we became a society of 'fine'? How did we all become conditioned to be 'fine' all the time and can we get the train back on track? The good news, it’s possible. The even better news, it might not be as hard as we think. Join facilitator Archie Messersmith-Bunting as we discuss the science behind your feelings, discover new ways to express what you’re feeling, and learn all important questions to ask when you are worried someone in your life might not be 'fine'.

 Ritual: Relearning the Basics

Knowing and appreciating the Ritual is an integral part of being a Phi Gamma Delta. Unfortunately, COVID-19 interrupted our ability to practice and perform these rights of membership. In this session, you will have the chance to relearn the basics of the Fraternity Ritual and ensure that your chapter is aligned with one of the most important aspects of being a brother.
