Purple Legionnaires,

Please note that this month’s Purple Legionnaire Monthly Update (PL Update) may look a little different than previous versions.

Now, more than ever, we need your help in instilling a culture of “living our values” within our chapters. The Fraternity’s landscape is changing, and the commitment to our core values is of utmost importance. Below you will find more how you can live our values as an advisor.

To best support you, we want your feedback. You receive a lot of communications from us – what is most important to you and your role? The PL Update is designed to give you pertinent reminders and updates and is sent each month following The Friday Letter - Admin. Edition.

Through the course of the academic year, you can find the current and previous months' updates on the Fraternity website. We also encourage you to join the Purple Legionnaire Facebook Group for networking and ideas.

Living Our Values As Advisors

The most precious inheritance we have in Phi Gamma Delta is our Ritual. In there we find the true core values of our beloved Fraternity. These values translate to the Purple Legionnaire position seamlessly. The advisor role comes with challenges, changes and learning. However, our core values guide us to make the best decisions or take the right actions when needed.

To live the core values as an advisor, you must understand the Ritual as well as the importance of your position and the impact you can have on the chapter you advise. As we undertake a historical transition over the next two years, our chapters need you. Your involvement and presence can help shape a new culture or pathway for the chapter.

#JoinTheFight Against Hazing

During National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW), September 19-23, the Fraternity will continue our #JoinTheFight Against Hazing campaign. This year, we encourage you to write a letter to the members of your chapter to be read during a meeting the week of September 19-23. This letter should share why hazing has no place in our brotherhood and the opportunities that lie ahead during the next two years.

We also invite our members to participate in NHPW. Visit www.phigam.org/FightHazing to view Hazing Prevention Resources and sign the Join the Fight Against Hazing Pledge.

Tax Filing Requirements

All nonprofit entities in the United States, including undergraduate chapters, are required to file an annual tax return with the IRS. The return is some version of the Form 990 and is due by the 15th day of the fifth month following the close of the fiscal year. For those chapters that have adopted a fiscal year end consistent with the Fraternity's, on June 30, this is due by November 15.

We ask Purple Legionnaires and/or appropriate BCA members to work with your Chapter Treasurer to ensure the 990 is filed on time. Most undergraduate chapters may file the 990-N (less than $50,000 in gross receipts) or 990-EZ (less than $50,000 in gross receipts). Chapters using Legacy Financial can file for free using file990.org.

Nonprofit entities that fail to file the annual return for three consecutive years will have their tax-exempt status revoked. The loss of tax-exempt status means the entity must operate as a for-profit entity with its revenue, such as dues and rent, subject to income tax. To see if your chapter is on the revocation list, visit this page on the IRS website. The Fraternity may also be able to help you find assistance if your tax-exempt status has been revoked. Contact Will Shier.

Mental Health Training for Advisors

Come learn from Archie Messersmith-Bunting, from ArchieCares, about the new mental health resources and tools you can use as a PL to support your chapters. We will send a Zoom registration link when we get closer to the program date, on Tuesday, October 25, at 8:30 pm ET (5:30 pm PT). For now, please save the date in your calendars.

Magazine Submission Deadline

The Fraternity is compiling content for the fall 2022 issue of The Phi Gamma Delta magazine, and we encourage your chapter to submit news! The deadline to submit stories and photos is Monday, September 26, at 11:59 pm PT.

We would like to get your news to showcase the success of ALL our chapters. Submissions can be sent via email or through the Fraternity's website. If you have photos to include with your story, please email directly to our Director of Communications Erica Carlson.
