Building a Seamless Sense of Belonging

Belonging is rarely talked about in our chapters/colonies. And while, admittedly, it comes off as a "fluffy" emotion, it can be one of the most impactful parts of a fraternity experience. If you can maximize a sense of belonging within your chapter/colony, you will start seeing a change in apathy and attendance, and your brotherhood will skyrocket.

Why Is Belonging Important?

Psychologists have said belonging is as much of a human need as food and shelter. It is also proven that the lack of belonging is one of the top reasons people leave member organizations. While this issue spans far beyond recruitment, we need to make sure they feel like they belong and are welcomed if we want to retain potential new members through recruitment.

How Can You Improve Belonging?

Start the conversation! During your next chapter meeting, or when you and some of your brothers are hanging out, ask them:
 - "What made you feel like you belonged with the organization when you went through recruitment?"
 - "Was there a particular person or event that stood out?"
 - "Do you feel like you belong now?"

If we can start these conversations with brothers, we can learn how to start to replicate the experiences in our current recruitment and gauge where our brothers stand with belonging now.

One of the most impactful experiences I have had as a brother and staff member, was during The Summit this year. During the Saturday evening session, brothers took turns sharing their stories of how they found belonging within Phi Gamma Delta. Some brothers talked about how brothers rallied around them during the death of a loved one, coming out, or when struggling with mental health and assimilating to college life. If we can learn from our brothers' stories, we can recognize the impact belonging has on the Phi Gamma Delta experience and help promote it later.

ChapterBuilder Tool of the Month - Notes

One of the fastest ways to increase and promote belonging during recruitment is to remember details and information about a potential member. However, this can be very difficult. Depending on the size of your campus, you can meet a minimum of a few dozen people a day! Remembering all of that information is not easy, and there is rarely a way to share that information with the chapter quickly and easily.

With ChapterBuilder, every potential member has their own profile where notes on a potential member can be seen by all brothers. When a potential member comes back to another event, brothers (and you) know what has been talked about with them and can build on the conversations and relationship that has already been started.

If potential members feel like they belong, our recruitment success increase!
