Fraternity & Chapter Events

Academy LogoAcademy

The Academy is designed to get new chapter officers off to a strong start by giving them the knowledge and skills they need to lead their chapter, and it is held annually, in early January. Participants are exposed to the basic elements of chapter operations as well as higher level leadership development.

The Archons (board of directors) attend, taking advantage of this opportunity to hear first-hand of the chapters’ successes and challenges. Frequently, brothers of national prominence will attend and address the attendees. The Academy also includes tracks for graduate volunteers who serve as Purple Legionnaire (chapter advisor) and Section Leader (regional volunteer officer).

The next Academy will be held January 5-7, 2024 in St. Louis, Missouri at the Union Station Hotel.

Phi Gam Archives iconArchives Weekend

Typically held in March of each year brothers gather in Lexington, Kentucky to assist the Curator of the Archives to preserve the Fraternity's and your chapter's history. Graduates and undergraduates are all welcome to attend and will get the opportunity to work with our most cherished records and artifacts. Activities include digitization, preservation, cataloging, and, if you like, research.

Ekklesia

Phi Gamma Delta's biennial convention, the Ekklesia, is held in the summer of even-numbered years. In this governing body, each undergraduate chapter has up to three voting delegates. Each graduate chapter may have one voting delegate. The primary business of the Ekklesia is to elect new Archons (board of directors), approve the budget for the ensuing biennium, and amend the Bylaws and Constitution.

Outside of the business conducted by the Ekklesia, there are educational programs and numerous social activities to allow brothers to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

The Ekklesia typically draws a crowd of more than 700 Phi Gams. The location moves around North America, as seen in this historic list.  A significant criterion in selecting a location is the presence of graduate brothers to assist with the coordination of events.

Phi Gamma Delta's 176th Ekklesia will be held August 8-11, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.

The Leadership Institute

The Leadership Institute: Building Courageous Leaders is a five day premier leadership experience that will empower brothers to work on real issues and challenges facing their chapters. The Institute works through those chapter issues that are incongruent with the values and Ritual of Phi Gamma Delta.

Brothers that attend The Leadership Institute will be able to:

  • Articulate their own definition and personal style of leadership.
  • Define what a “personal value” means and identify their own personal values.
  • Create a realistic action plan in consultation with other brothers and facilitators for guiding themselves and their chapter.

Pig Dinners

Phi Gamma Delta's Norris Pig Dinners are the most widely observed and longest continually running, chapter-based, annual graduate event in the Greek world. The first Pig Dinner was held at the University of California Berkeley in 1893. In 1902, the Pig Dinner was dedicated in memory of Frank Norris (California Berkeley 1894), whose sense of humor created the event that has become an annual ceremony throughout all of Phi Gamma Delta.

The Summit

Every summer, Phi Gams from across North America have the chance to visit their International Headquarters and to learn about recruitment and new member education.

This weekend-long event typically takes place in June or July and is a great opportunity for any brother, not just officers or members of the recruitment committee.

The next Summit will be held June 16-18, 2023, at Transylvania University (Lexington, Kentucky)
